Reasons for Penalties: From last few years Google has been very strict to maintain its own trust and standard. So they keep on updating algorithm with effective methods. These methods are known as updates. A website or blog can be penalized if they found suspicious under following updates – Google Panda, Google Penguin, Google Hummingbird, Google DMCA Pirate, Google Knowledge Graph.

How to know the site has got the penalty?

If it is found that the website ranking high, suddenly nowhere in the search engines means it is deindexed from google or ranking decrease in search engine result pages. You can find it on Google webmaster. This will show manual actions.

PANDA: This update rollout in February 2011. What it does is it find if a website has Low-quality Content, Thin Content, (Plagiarism) Copy content, The Structure of Content, Duplicate & Crap Content. If it is found then the site get the penalty.

PENGUIN: This was released in October 2013. Surveillance includes Unnatural Links, Bad Anchor Text, Paid Backlinks, Irrelevant Backlink, Keyword Stuffing and Over Optimization.

HUMMINGBIRD: This can be defined as on-page SEO and better interaction between a search engine and website to serve better result. This penalty can be applied if a set of rules of on-page SEO is not spot on.

PIGEON: This is basically to improve the quality of local searches and provide more relevant results to the users based on the factors such as location, distance etc.

When a website filled with purely spam content, or it is getting some unnatural links, spun and copied content and quality of the website is low.

Identically, to save a website from penalty remember not to stuff a page with the keyword. Do not use a keyword more than 2 or 3 times on a webpage.

Especially try to use URL structure, Title of webpage and Description wisely with chosen keywords.

Not to mention but do not use actual keywords for anchor text more than 10%. That will make it look unnatural. Especially mix it with some natural and logical brand words and with naked URLs.

Most relevant is to add unique content. Do not copy content from other sources.
